This module covers an overview of the Bible to see what it says about children and children’s ministry and will touch on most areas of ministry to children. The subject will also look at some significant historical events that have given rise to the modern evangelical Sunday School or Children’s Ministry as we know it today.
Students will also consider significant people such as Robert Raikes and Henrietta Mears who were pioneers of the Sunday School movement. Students will understand how children’s ministry has evolved from the book of Genesis to the modern time as well as gain an understanding of the child in the Old Testament and New Testament and the responsibility of the older generation to teach the younger generations.
Topics covered will include: the child in the Old Testament; the child in the New Testament; historical foundations of Children’s Ministry.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
- understand the nature of children and why and how we should care for them.
- understand the status children have before God and should therefore have in the church.
- build a dynamic and sustainable children’s ministry on a strong theological base.
- treat the death of young or unborn children in a biblical way.
- lead children to communion, baptism and conversion.
- recognize the right motivation for wanting an effective children’s ministry.
teach theological beliefs to children
- understand the contribution that pioneers in children’s ministry have made to modern children’s ministry.
Content
Most or all of the following topics will be addressed:
- An in depth look at what the Bible says about children.
- A look at whether the church has fulfilled God’s commands in the matter of reaching and teaching children.
- What is God’s heart for children.
- What is the role of the church and the parents in the teaching of children.
- The importance of having an effective children’s ministry program.
- To know the difference between desiring an effective children’s ministry for church growth as compared to wanting to help children.
- The importance of seeing children as the church of today and the church of the future and to know which is more important.
- See children’s ministry from Genesis to Revelation to modern time.
