High Five Divorce Recovery Programme
Children are often the silent sufferers in a divorce. Long after parents have moved on children can still be coming to terms with the enormous changes that have taken place in their lives; changes due to the break up of their family; changes that they often can’t ever comprehend.
For years we’ve heard the heart cry of these children as they try to adjust to circumstances beyond their control. Often people have the mistaken idea that they will bounce back, that they are flexible, that they will get over it. But they’re not and many are finding even the everyday tasks of life overwhelming.
The High Five programme uses stories depicting situations children might find themselves in, exploring feelings and fears they may have. It becomes progressively easier for children to respond and open up. They can see that others feel and react just like they do.
The power of this creative approach is amazing. This group method guides children through topics such as choices, forgiveness, and all the sad feelings that go with separation and divorce. Each child has a mentor known as a coach. Stories are told which the child identifies with and they learn that they are not alone. This has a strong biblical base but does not scare off unbelievers. With the right people this little box could touch thousands of children.
